Howard Grotts of Durango was first to the finish line Saturday at the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race. He finished in 6 hours, 15 minutes, the third-fastest winning time in race history.
It was an all-Durango podium at the 2017 Leadville Trail 100 MTB race. Howard Grotts, center, finished first ahead of three-time champion Todd Wells, left, and 2017 Leadville Stage Race winner Payson McElveen, right. Wells was second, and McElveen finished third.
Howard Grotts dug deep to conquer the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race Saturday, two weeks after suffering a shoulder injury.
Todd Wells, front, and Howard Grotts rode together for roughly 25 miles until they reached the Powerline climb. Grotts went on to win the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race, while Wells, a three-time race winner, finished second.
