For many years, I have flown on planes both military and civilian around the world, and after Sept. 11, many necessary changes in security were made. However, the recent pat-down searches of air travelers leaves me wondering if any of the people in charge at the Transportation Security Administration possess any common sense.
The objective of the new searches is supposedly to detect explosives hidden in underwear. Everything I have read indicates that the scanners in question may not detect explosives hidden in underwear. Thus, we will grope people.
My question is if the scanners may not detect explosives, why are only the people who refuse the scanner subjected to groping. If the purpose was to find explosives, everyone would be groped.
The really effective substitute for groping would be a trained explosives dog. Nothing in the world of electronics can beat the nose of a trained dog. I would rather be fondled by a dog than a TSA agent.
I am by training an electronic engineer and have worked on many military and commercial radar systems. There is really no safe exposure to X-ray and microwave radiation, especially in children.
The reason we have not been successfully attacked since Sept. 11 is because the terrorists are not very bright. They continue to try to bring down an airliner, the most heavily defended possible target. In this country, there are millions of completely undefended targets, such as churches, schools, hospitals and public buildings. Airport baggage areas have no security and are open to the street. Ticket areas are completely undefended. We should pray the terrorists continue to be stupid, but I fear they are slowly waking up.
Not being politically correct, I am all in favor of profiling possible terrorists, including American citizens. The perpetrators of Sept. 11 were all from another country, and all recent bomb attempts were done by people of one religious persuasion. But, we will probably die of political correctness catering to our enemies.
The best choice one can make if you do not like to be groped is to avoid air travel.
