The Durango Nordic Ski Club, after a training race at the Nordic Center at Purgatory two weeks ago, traveled to Vail/Minturn last weekend for the first Junior National Qualifier of the season.
Our team showed our true colors this weekend, racing with the heart they show every day at practice, head coach Josh Dalley said.
On the opening day of races, Ski and Snowboard Club Vail hosted a classic-technique event.
The mens race was won by Durango Nordic Ski Club alum Tad Elliott. Another former ski club racer, Lars Ellefson, was sixth.
Leading the way for the Durango Nordic Ski Club in the junior mens race (ages 16-19) was Gino Pastore in fourth place followed by Sepp Kuss in 10th, Haakon Samuelson in 13th, Gunter Ott in 15th and Ben Capelin in 22nd.
The junior womens race was led by DNSC skier AliciaRose Pastore in second place.
She was followed by Elena Breed (DNSC alum) in sixth, Rachel Hampton in 10th and Hannah Madden in 15th.
In the J2 boys race (ages 14-15), the race was won by Durango Nordic skier Cully Brown.
Following Brown were Haakon Sigurslid in third, Levi Kurlander in 19th, John Rhoades in 23rd, Gordon Gianniny in 24th and Abe Ott in 26th.
In the girls J2 race, Durango was paced by Amy Katz in fifth place, Lily Oswald in eighth, Kaylee Blevins in ninth, Hannah Peterson in 14th and Emma Greenberg in 20th.
The Durango Nordic Ski Club had two J3 boys racing.
Charlie Greenberg skied to a second-place finish, and Jared Webster placed 17th.
Stan Ott placed eighth in the J4 (11-12) race.
The excitement continued Sunday as the racers went head-to-head around a 1K loop in an elimination- sprint race.
The top three skiers in each heat moved on to the next round until the finals.
In J4 boys, Stan Ott placed ninth. Charlie Greenberg sprinted to the line to claim second place in the J3 boys, followed by Jared Webster in 14th.
Amy Katz was sixth in the final for J2 girls, followed by Kaylee Blevins in seventh, Hannah Peterson in 10th, Lily Oswald in 13th and Emma Greenberg in 19th.
In J2 boys, Durango Nordic skiers Brown and Sigurslid sprinted to the line in the final, placing first and second, respectively.
They were followed by Levi Kurlander in 22nd, John Rhoades in 24th, Abe Ott in 27th, and Gordon Gianniny in 30th.
In the womens race, ages 16 and up, Pastore led DNSC in fifth place, followed by Rachel Hampton in sixth, Hannah Madden in 12th, and DNSC alum Elena Breed in 13th.
In the mens race, ages 16 and older, Elliott led the way in fourth; Samuelson was sixth.
Ellefson, a DNSC alum like Elliott, was eighth. Pastore was 13th. Sepp Kusswas 15th.
Ben Capelin placed 26th, and Gunter Ott placed 27th.
