100 years ago: The Durango Democrat received a telephone call “from the Florida mesa of the death of Peter Alfred Wahlburg, from acute indigestion.” Wahlburg spent 20 years in the area and “appeared well and hearty” when he was in Durango the previous Monday, “apparently in the best of health, to attend a lodge meeting.”
75 years ago: Political leaders estimated that “an absolute maximum of 150,000 votes” would be cast during Colorado’s primary election Sept. 8.
50 years ago: The Palace Cabaret and the Ice Cream Parlor in Rio Grande-land closed for the season and were scheduled to reopen the following summer.
25 years ago: Someone issued a complaint to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office that a man on a tan mountain bike was swatting at passing cars on Florida Road, west of Edgemont Ranch. When confronted, the man said he “had been clipped by a car and so now he swats at them.”
