On the same day Fort Lewis College received consideration for the No. 1 ranking in womens college basketball, its star player swept the weekly conference honors.
The FLC womens basketball program remained third overall in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll this week but received a pair of first-place votes.
Delta State University of Cleveland, Miss., remained atop the rankings with 22 first-place votes, and Lander University of Greenwood, S.C., remained second and took five first-place votes.
The three schools were the only to garner first-place attention.
FLC (12-0, 7-0 RMAC) is atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in large part to the play of junior post and first-year starter Dana Schreibvogel.
The 6-foot forward from Weld Central High School in Keenesburg led the Skyhawks with 45 points and 17 rebounds in two road victories against Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday and Monday, respectively, to start the Skyhawks 2011 slate.
Schreibvogel was named this weeks RMAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. She also swept the honors Nov. 22, and the offensive nod was her third this season two shy of Amy Mohrs single-season program record.
She doesnt ever have an off game. Thats whats amazing about this season, Skyhawks sixth-year head coach Mark Kellogg said in a news release. Shes just playing at such a high level and with a lot of confidence.
Schreibvogels numbers with RMAC rankings to date:
b 18.1 points per game (second)
b .600 field goal percentage (first, RMAC; sixth, D-II)
b 7.8 rebounds per game (eighth)
b 6.2 defensive rebounds per game (second)
b 2.3 steals per game (seventh)
b .776 free throw percentage (11th)
Schreibvogel will lead FLC into a pair of home RMAC games this weekend. FLC will host N.M. Highlands (5-9, 2-6 RMAC) at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Whalen Gym and will host Western N.M. (0-12, 0-8 RMAC) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Kellogg called Schreibvogels RMAC honors this week wins for the team, too.
Its a tribute to our team as well because we won games, he said. Theyre individual awards, but at the same time they point to team success.
