The Ignacio High School boys basketball team will play for the consolation championship today at the annual Rumble in the Jungle tournament in Aztec.
The Ignacio boys beat Magdalena, N.M., 61-35 on Friday night to reach the consolation final.
Ignacio opened the tournament Thursday with a 62-51 loss to Piedra Vista of Farmington.
Pedro Vigil led Ignacio with 21 points against Magdalena.
Teammate Ryan Brooks had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Shane Richmond, who had 16 points in the loss to Piedra Vista, added nine points in the win over the Magdalena Steers.
Brooks added nine points against Piedra Vista.
Pedro (Vigil) was real sick (Thursday), Ignacio head coach Chis Valdez said. He didnt play that well against Piedra Vista.
But the Bobcats guard bounced back with a dominant game Friday, Valdez said.
Ignacio, 6-2 overall and ranked No. 5 in Colorados Class 2A poll this week by The Denver Post, will play Shiprock at 3 p.m. today in Aztec.
Shiprock has a really good press. Well have to work on that, Valdez said.
The Bobcats faced another pressing team in Piedra Vista on Thursday night.
That game should help the Bobcats today, Valdez said.
We did a great job breaking their press, he said.
The Bobcats fell behind by 14 against Piedra Vista but managed to tie the score in the third quarter. Piedra Vista hit key foul shots down the stretch for the victory.
Ignacio played Thursday and Friday without two key reserves who are ineligible this week, Valdez said.
The Ignacio boys will play another nonleague game next week when they travel to take on undefeated Pagosa Springs on Tuesday. The 3A Pirates defeated the 4A Durango Demons on Thursday night at Durango High School.
