IGNACIO With a couple of his regulars slowed by illness and injury, Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez looked to the rest of his roster Friday night.
And he liked what he saw.
The Ignacio boys basketball coach watched as the Bobcats methodically pulled away from Norwood 66-35 in a San Juan Basin League game at the IHS gym.
We had a couple guys sick, so we wanted to get them in and out of the game (quickly), Valdez said. So we got to use a lot of kids ... every game we play, were getting a little deeper.
Junior Paul Tahlo, in the starting lineup Friday night, had a pair of steals and a putback basket in Ignacios surge to a 12-4 first-quarter lead.
With 6-6 senior Ryan Brooks battling a bad cold, the Bobcats turned to 6-4 senior Shane Richmond on the inside.
Brooks worked more on the outside, often triggering to Richmond, who led the Bobcats with 17 points.
With Shane (Richmond), we tried to use him as a workhorse inside, Valdez said. And he did a heckuva job for us.
Brooks and fellow senior Pedro Vigil added 11 points each as Ignacio improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the San Juan Basin League.
Deion Hudson, off the bench, added nine points in Ignacios win and was one of 10 Bobcats to score.
Jay Black, Xavier Watts and Clayton Jefferson all hit 3-pointers for Ignacio. Orion Watts, Colton Davis, Justin Carver and Kelton Richmond also played in front of the large crowd, which turned out to honor the Bobcats after their big win over Class 3A Pagosa Springs on Tuesday.
Vigil brought the crowd to its feet late in the second quarter when he picked up a steal at midcourt, dribbled behind his back to his nondominant left hand before scooping in a lefty layup.
The hustling play brought Valdez to his feet, too.
Our kids understand that theyve got to work hard and compete at a high level to play on this team, Valdez said.
The short-handed Mavericks did manage to lead in one statistical category sprained ankles. They had two Friday night.
IHS, ranked No. 6 in the state in Class 2A by The Denver Post, will travel to Nucla for another round of SJBL games today.
