Long workday

Members of the Creepers Jeepers Gang work to repair Elwood Pass in the San Juan National Forest, Pagosa Ranger District. Fourteen members of the club put in a 13-hour day, said Kevin L. Heckman, information director of the club. The club originally thought the area was a spring, but found it was actually three springs causing the road to be impassable. They drained the area and dug trenches to put in a drain tube. Next, they filled in with rock and put down a screen to catch silt to prevent the tube from plugging up. Then, they topped with rocks and packed dirt on top. Finally, they lined the side of the road with downed trees to encourage drivers to stay on the road.
