The Durango Swim Club hosted an All-Comers Time Trial on Jan. 29 at the Durango Community Recreation Center, a swim meet designed to give first-timers a chance to compete and others who havent competed in a while to jump back in the pool.
The highlights, as provided by DSC head coach Suzanne Schieltz:
b Cameron Delacey, 10, finished first in the 50-yard freestyle and dropped 11 seconds in her 50 breaststroke and 100 free.
b Sydney Delacey, 7, was one of the first-timers: Although she was a little nervous swam all her strokes legally, Schieltz said.
b Steevie Delio, 10, swam a state cut in the 50 free.
b Ruby Epstein, 10, despite not swimming in a meet in nearly two years, finished first and swam a state cut in the 50 backstroke and placed second in the 50 breast and 50 free.
b Camden Garland, 12, has only been swimming for a few months but looks like he has been swimming for years, Schieltz said. He will be a great swimmer down the line.
b Dawson Garland, 9, finished second in the 50 back and sixth in the 50 free.
b Leland Heinicke, 8, finished first in the 25 back, 25 breast and 25 free.
b Madeline Kothe, 8, finished seventh in the 25 breast and eighth in the 25 back in her first meet.
b Ian Linn, 8, loves to swim, Schieltz said, and it showed with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 25 back and 25 free.
b Jesse Parker, 8, finished third in the 25 butterfly and seventh in the 50 free.
b Eliza Rossi finished first in the 25 back and 25 breast and fourth in the 25 free, while Whyeth Rossi had a great first meet, having solid swims and great-looking strokes, Schieltz said.
b Brody Smith, 5, the youngest swimmer on the DSC, finished third in the 25 free.
A few masters swimmers competed at the All-Comers meet, too: Quincy Ellis, 62; Tom Joyner, 45; Brett Kholhardt, 26; Jen McGrath, 34; and John Simons, 59.
The masters, Schieltz said, swim Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the rec center. They are coached by Bill Palmer.
The Durango Swim Club will compete next at the Western Slope Championships on Feb. 19-20 in Grand Junction.
The state meet is March 4-6.
