100 years ago: The local fish hatchery worked to spawn eastern brook trout from Electra, Baurs and Borne’s lakes, and had high hopes for a generous hatch during spring planting.
75 years ago: The Dolores Bears, after losing their first game against the Silverton Miners, were scheduled “to tackle” the Mancos Bluejays in Mancos.
50 years ago: The fall season’s prolonged dry spell was hurting area farmers and ranchers badly, according to Fred V. Kroeger of Farmers Supply. “The wheat isn’t coming up right, and the pastures are drying up,” he said.
25 years ago: John Waddell, “mild-mannered Durango man,” helped “thwart a theft” at the J.C. Penney store in Durango Mall by “chasing some bad guys down the highway” in his car, who stole some parkas adorned with Oakland Raiders insignias. Waddell heard the store clerk yelling and saw them jump into a car in the parking lot, and decided to follow them. “It was a little bit exciting,” he said.
