Montbello surged away from the Durango Demons on Friday night in Denver, pulling away from the DHS boys basketball team 64-42.
Richard Montoya helped the Demons to a quick start. He hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter to keep DHS close.
Loren Doughty contributed six points in the first half for DHS.
"We did very well in the first half," DHS head coach Tom Dunne said. "Richard Montoya ... and Loren Doughty kept us in it. At halftime, I was not unhappy," he said.
He said the quick, athletic players from Montbello attacked the rim in the second half, taking advantage of their quickness.
"They are very quick kids, and we had a lot of trouble with that," Dunne said.
"But we had quality effort. We just ran into a group of kids who play a lot more basketball than we do," the DHS coach said.
Sean Edwards of Montbello led all scorers with 17 points.
"He's an excellent, excellent ballplayer," Dunne said.
Doughty led DHS with 15 points.
Montoya finished with 11.
Jordan Gillen added six as the DHS boys moved to 2-4 overall.
The DHS boys will play state powerhouse Denver East today before returning home to face Kirtland Central on Tuesday night.
