Officer Cody Mathews of the Durango Police Department earned the Best Beard Award on Thursday during an awards ceremony for “No Shave November,” a fundraiser for local Special Olympics athletes. Twenty-four members of the department paid $50 to participate in the fundraiser. Men grew beards and women wore a blue streak in their hair. Including donations from the public, the event raised $2,300. The money will go toward meals, hotel stays and uniforms for the athletes.
