Members of Durango Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031 picked up 700 pounds of non-perishable food on Sunday to be handed out to local families in need.
Mary Perino, a member of the VFW, said she received a call about two weeks ago from Peter Buchanan, a U.S. Navy veteran and chairman for the CFW Charity Airlift based in Denver.
Buchanan told Perino that the station in Denver had excess food, and organizers wanted to spread resources throughout the state.
On Sunday, an airplane dropped off a variety of shelf-stable foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, such as vegetables, noodles and mac and cheese.
Perino said the VFW plans to give the food to veteran families in need throughout the area. Anything the VFW doesn’t need will be distributed to the community, she said.
Joe Perino, Mary’s husband, said he also plans to start a fund to buy toys for children in veteran’s families. Anyone interested in donating to the fund can visit the VFW, he said.
