This week, Rep. Scott Tipton has the opportunity to vote no on HR 217, The Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, which determines who gets to use Title X funds. A yes vote will, in essence, defund Planned Parenthood.
Although Title X funds are not used to provide abortions (that has already been axed), the Republicans are seeking to deny millions of poor and low-income women and men access to comprehensive family planning, cancer screenings, HIV testing and other essential health services because Planned Parenthood is an abortion provider. In one word, its malicious.
This bill has 165 sponsors, 150 of whom are middle-aged white men. With all of their objections to government interference, I find it interesting that they seek to interfere in the most private of domains.
HR 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, is also coming up for a vote. This bill as well seeks to further erode a womans right to choose by including such insidious provisions as: no health-care service furnished by any physician employed by the federal government may include abortion.
I, for one, am seriously concerned about the state of our democracy. These issues should not be the ones concerning Congress when there are the more pressing issues of bolstering the economy and a warming world.
Instead, they would deign to use their federal power to return this country back to the dark ages of illegal abortions and unnecessary deaths.
