The Ignacio High School wrestling team split a pair of team duals on Friday, crushing Sargent 61-6 and then losing a thriller to No. 1-ranked Paonia 44-31.
The matches were the first of the new year for the Bobcats, who made the six-hour trip to Paonia for the Friday matches.
In the opening win over Sargent, Ignacio picked up forfeit wins for Jeff Herrera at 119 pounds, Casey Haga at 125, Ethan Person at 145, Derek Naranjo at 171 and Abel Velasquez at 189.
The Bobcats won by 7-3 decision at 112 behind Alex Peña.
Josh Plehinger scored a pin for Ignacio at 130 pounds.
Will Appenzeller did likewise for the Bobcats at 135.
Raudel Lucero won 10-0 at 140. Colton Wyatt had a pin at 160.
And Chance Wyatt had a pin at 215.
Trent Ostendorf lost by pin at 152.
In the dual against top-ranked Paonia, Ignacio had two open weight classes (103 and heavyweight). Otherwise the Bobcats wrestled evenly with the Eagles.
Peña won by pin at 112 for Ignacio.
Herrera won by forfeit at 119.
Haga won a tense 4-3 decision in his match.
Plehinger lost a tough 7-6 decision in his match.
Appenzeller logged another pin at 135.
Lucero also won for the Bobcats, scoring a 9-1 decision at 140.
Chance Wyatt won the other match for Ignacio, with another pinfall at 215.
The Bobcats lost by pin at 145, 152, 171 and 189.
Colton Wyatt also lost a tech fall at 160.
"I like the way we performed," Ignacio head coach Bob Overturf said.
"We had a long drive, but I'm pleased with the way the kids wrestled."
He said the chance to duel with one of the state's best teams at Paonia was valuable experience for the Bobcats.
They'll stay in Paonia for a multi-team tournament today.
