The U.S. Forest Service, in partnership with BP America and Four Corners Backcountry Horsemen, recently completed a new parking lot in the Columbine Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest to allow more access to the Saul’s Creek area near Bayfield.
The parking lot was proposed in a 2012 travel management plan to expand the limited parking near the gate entrance to Saul’s Creek. However, a lack of federal funding delayed the project until BP donated gravel to grade the parking lot during the fall.
The Forest Service designed and coordinated the project. Backcountry Horsemen supplied boulders to line the border of the lot and will install hitch rails in the spring, conduct long-term maintenance and erect a sign that recognizes project partners.
