Hitting the books has paid off for four Durango High School seniors. Katherine Brown, Brian Harrison, Gabrielle Massone and Alex Max were named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The finalist standing is based on students test scores on the Preliminary SAT and SAT.
Nationwide, 1 percent of all entrants advance to become finalists. About 50 percent of finalists receive National Merit scholarships, and all are considered for college and corporate-sponsored merit scholarships.
Harrison, who plans to attend Colorado State University next year and study chemistry, said he worked hard in high school.
I wanted to get into college and have a good career afterwards, he said.
