Durango Nature Studies will offer a “snowpack science” hike from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Haviland Lake, 20 miles north of Durango off U.S. Highway 550.
Naturalist Mike Bienkowski will lead participants on an educational hike about avalanches, winter wildlife, snowpack layers and grain types, weather conditions, snow depth and topography. He will also discuss what the snowpack means for spring runoff, animal ecology and safety in the backcountry.
The hike is free for Nature Studies members and kids younger than 12. Cost is $10 for nonmembers.
