The Bayfield High School boys basketball team opened 2009 with a road win over Navajo Prep in Farmington on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines, who built a 10-point halftime lead, held on for a 52-47 victory.
"It was pretty close the whole way through," BHS head coach Chad Nachtrieb said. "We were a little slow at first, but then ... we played good defense in the second, third and fourth."
He said the Wolverines had a very balanced offense as they improved to 3-5 overall.
Zach Adams led Bayfield with 15 points.
Jared Qualls scored 11 points.
Kaleb Zink added nine, while Jesse McCoy scored eight for the Wolverines.
"We've been working on our man defense, and this was a good test for us to pull out a win," Nachtrieb said.
He said he was very pleased with the Wolverines' effort, coming on the heels of a canceled game Friday night against Sangre de Cristo.
"It was good to get back out on the court," Nachtrieb said.
The Bayfield boys return home to host Montezuma-Cortez on Tuesday. The boys C, JV and varsity games will be played at Bayfield High School.
The Bayfield girls, meanwhile, will travel to Cortez for a tripleheader.
The varsity games in Bayfield and Cortez are expected to start about 7 p.m.
