Vote no on the upcoming recall – on principle. In a democracy, we hold elections to select our representatives. In the absence of an egregious violation of the law or ethical codes, or the inability to fulfill one’s duties, the voice of the people should be honored.
In the case at hand, our democratically-elected county commissioner, Gwen Lachelt, has neither broken the law nor violated an ethical code, as cited in many other articles, editorials and letters to the editor.
Lachelt’s term ends in 2020. At that point our community will have an opportunity to vote to replace her on the commission. Subverting the electoral process undermines our democracy. I doubt that is the intent of any of us.
Though Americans sometimes disagree on policy perspectives and personalities, we all cherish our democracy. Frustrating though it sometimes is, democracy is about systems. For these reasons, I urge you not to support the petition for the recall of Gwen Lachelt.
