A motorcyclist died in a head-on crash with a Subaru Forester on Saturday afternoon on U.S. Highway 160 at the intersection of County Road 501.
The Subaru Forester was westbound on Highway 160 and turned left in front of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, said Trooper Gary Cutler, a spokesman with Colorado State Patrol.
The driver of the motorcycle, a 48-year-old Durango man, was killed in the crash, Cutler said.
A passenger on the motorcycle, a 53-year-old Durango woman, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, he said. The motorcycle riders were not wearing helmets and they were thrown from the bike in the crash.
The state patrol has not yet charged the driver of the Subaru, Katherine Phelps, 75, a Bayfield resident, he said.
The agency has not yet released the names of the motorcycle riders.
The crash closed the highway from about 12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday.
