An Aztec man died after striking a tree at Durango Mountain Resort, officials confirmed Friday. The accident occurred about 2 p.m. Wednesday near the bottom of the intermediate trail Boogie, where trails converge before reaching the Hermosa Park Lift, or Lift 3, said Liz Witte, spokeswoman for the resort.
The skier was identified as 65-year-old Jack Root.
Root suffered massive head injuries and died at the scene, said La Plata County Coroner Dr. Carol Huser.
He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
A Care Flight helicopter landed at the bottom of Lift 3 and airlifted Root's body off the mountain.
The La Plata County Sheriff's Office investigated the death, but efforts to reach a spokesman for further information Friday were unsuccessful.
This is the first skier death reported this season at Durango Mountain Resort.
