National County Government Month is celebrated each April by the nations counties to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of county government. The 2011 theme is Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces and their Families.
In keeping with National County Government Month, La Plata County commissioners and county staff wish to cordially invite all members of the community to a series of events hosted by the La Plata County veterans service officer in honor of our veterans, armed forces members and their families.
Here is a schedule of local events:
April 1: POW/MIA ceremony and flag dedication, 8 a.m., front lawn of La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave. Ceremony and flag dedication paying honor to our soldiers listed as prisoners of war and missing in action.
April 2: 9Health Fair, 6:30 a.m. to noon, Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane. The La Plata County veterans service officer will have a booth set up at the health fair for anyone seeking VA benefit information.
April 12: Recognition for La Plata County DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Transportation Program volunteers, 10 a.m., meeting room at La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave.
April 16: 9Health Fair, 6:30 a.m. to noon, Sky Ute Casino & Lodge, 14324 Colorado Highway 172. The La Plata County veterans service officer will have a booth set up at the health fair for anyone seeking VA benefit information.
April 22: Durango VA Clinic open house, 1970 East Third Ave., Suite 102 (next to the Durango Public Library), 1 to 4:30 p.m. Stop by to learn about what the VA Clinic offers to the community.
