It has been 10 years since former KDUR station manager Nancy Stoffer stole the idea for Furniture as Art from a childrens charity in Pittsburgh. And for the Fort Lewis College-based community radio station, it has been a decidedly lucrative act of plagiarism.
The cumulative revenue that the annual art auction has brought KDUR, a nonprofit community radio that relies on student fees and community contributions for its very existence, is now measured in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. And the 2010 10th annual version could be the biggest yet with 30 pieces up for live auction and another 15 artists represented in a concurrent silent auction. The first event, held in 2001, featured 18 pieces in the live auction and no silent auction artists.
Five of the original artists Mike Brieger, Tim Hunter, Maureen May, Deb Morgan and Joan Russell contributed then and will be a part of this years auction, too. Not every artist has contributed every year, but May and Jeff and Susan Wise have come close, participating in nine of the 10 years.
The other artists whose pieces will be auctioned live Thursday night are Ilze Aviks, Andy Barber, Bill Bowlby, Carol Clark, Sam Cook, Craig Erickson, Amy Felker, Debra Greenblatt, Jenni Bennett Gross, Miki Harder, Kathy Hobal, Connie Imig, McCarson Jones, Tess Jordan, Tom Kipp, Emily Lloyd, Mary Ellen Long, Shay Lopez, Jeff Madeen, Dianne Milner, Carol & Ron Ozaki, Lisa Pedolsky, John Perry, Bryan Saren, Jennifer Scholfield and Scott Smith.
As always, artists are asked to augment an existing piece of furniture or create something from scratch. Its an open-ended request that leads to a mix of the functional and/or decorative pieces that are as varied as the artists themselves. The pieces are on display through Thursday at businesses throughout downtown Durango.
Artists participating in the silent auction are Rebecca Barfoot, Rose Burek, Tom Hahl, Tim Kapustka, Robyn Kellogg, Beth Lamberson, Sarah Peterson, Sher Masor, Edward Prichard Iii, Glen Shoemaker, Lisa & Loren Skyhorse, Kristen Smith, Becky Turner and Holly Zabka.
Auctioneers Calvin and Pat Story of Treasure Auction will again orchestrate the bidding frenzy. In addition to the live and silent auctions, the evening also includes hors doeuvres and cake by The Yellow Carrot, music by Tom MacCluskey and Bob Newnam and a ninth anniversary after-party.
