The La Plata County 4-H community is deeply saddened by the unfortunate loss of Shaniah Farmer.
Shaniah was an active member of the Bayfield Riders 4-H club. She participated in horse project and took on the role of scrapbooking in her club. Through horse project, Shaniah competed in many 4-H gymkhana events riding her horse Bubba. Her bright smile, winning attitude and joyful spirit will be remembered by all who knew her and came into contact with her.
The 13-year-old died in an automobile accident March 22 in Texas. Her mother, Deanna Farmer, brother, Hayden, and sister, Aubree, also were injured.
Shaniah will be greatly missed riding around in the Fairgrounds pavilion and arena this spring, summer and years to come. Our hearts and prayers go out to Shaniahs friends and family during this most difficult time.
In times of hardship, we can come together as a community to heal from this tragedy and support the people most directly affected by this loss. The Extension office would like to make people aware of some of the events that are being organized to help friends of Shaniah and the Farmer family. These events and fundraisers are open to the entire public and not just the 4-H community.
Death is something that is not truly understandable and can be really scary and confusing. It is important to grieve and be able to talk about how people are feeling. At 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Pine Room at the Extension building, Leann Shaw with Axis Health will be offering a group session to help people in the grieving process. We encourage everyone who knew Shaniah to attend, especially youths.
One of the great lessons we teach within 4-H is community service, community work and community devotion. The 4-H community will be doing several fundraisers for the Farmer family to help with their loss and their medical bills.
On Saturday, there will be a horse clinic at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. A lunch and bake sale will be going on as a fundraiser for the Farmer family. Also Saturday, there will be a dance at 8 p.m. at the Bayfield Recreation Center on South Street hosted by the Pine River 4-H Club. A donation area will be set up at the dance.
A pig sale will be held April 9 at the Farmers Supply Mill; concessions raised will be donated to the Farmer family. Later in the year, on July 9, the Spring Fling Gymkhana will be held in Shaniahs honor, and proceeds from this event will go to the family.
Finally, we are organizing a silent auction and dinner to benefit the Farmer family. The date and location are being determined. This information will be announced by Wednesday on the La Plata County 4-H website, www.co.laplata.co.us/departments_official/extension_office/4_H.
If anyone would like to donate items for the auction and/or make donations to the Farmer family, please call or stop by the Extension office for assistance.
