In the news recently was a story about a Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in Indiana being forced to cease operations because of lack of funding. The agency recently served the children of three counties, but now the doors are closed and all the matches have been terminated.
Let's not let what happened in Indiana happen here. Our children need us now more than ever. As a member of the board of directors of Big Brother Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado for more than 23 years, I have seen firsthand the impact Big Brothers Big Sisters has on the children we serve. Since its formation 25 years ago, our agency has matched more than 2,700 children with caring, responsible adult mentors. Big Brothers Big Sisters' vision is for a brighter future for all children, which in turn benefits our schools, our families, and builds a stronger community for all.
These are bad economic times for everyone, and especially for nonprofit organizations. I urge you to support your local nonprofits in any way you can. Join in on a fundraiser, donate your time, or make a monetary or in-kind contribution. For more information about our local Big Brothers Big Sisters' agency, visit www.bbig.org or call the local Big Brothers Big Sisters' office at 247-3720.
