Durango split a baseball doubleheader Saturday at Belen High School in Belen, N.M.
Durango defeated Belen 16-10 in Game 1 then lost 5-1 in Game 2.
"They had a kid that went the distance in the second game," Durango High School baseball coach Rob Coddington said. "He kept us off balance. We weren't able to hit him."
Coddington said the Demons were "really good" in the first game. "We battled," he said.
Kenneth Gallegos, who came on to pitch the seventh inning, was the winning pitcher and beneficiary of an eight-run seventh.
Belen tied the game at 8 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Durango answered with eight runs in the top of the seventh, including a grand slam by Gallegos. He went 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBIs in the game.
Ben Southworth, back in a baseball uniform after hanging up his skis for the winter, had three hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in the victory.
Southworth earned the start in Game 2 and threw four innings, while Matt Elliott and Chris Breed pitched in relief.
Durango (3-4) will open Southwestern League play Friday at Grand Junction.
