Durango Swim Club will be well represented at the 12-and-under state championships this weekend at Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Several of the team’s young swimmers turned in state qualifying times at the Western Slope League Championships to help DSC to a fifth-place finish in Grand Junction.
DSC finished the meet with 1,366.5 points. Aspen Swim Club dominated the meet with 3,154.5 points. Maverick Aquatics was second with 1,754.5 points, Montrose Marlins Swim Club was third with 1,703 points and Team Sopris Swimming was fourth with 1,608.5 points.
Cassidy Scott, 10, was a steady presence for DSC and qualified for state in every event in which she competed. She qualified in the 100-meter backstroke, the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, and the 50 and 100 butterfly events.
Merin Schmidt, 10, qualified in the 100 and 200 freestyle, and 50 and 100 backstroke.
Jayden Craig, 10, qualified in the 100 backstroke, and the 50 butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle and backstroke.
Aileen McManus, 9, qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke.
Chloe Cook, 12, qualified in the 50 freestyle.
The 10-and-under team of Craig, McManus, Schmidt and Scott won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 2:34.67. The quartet also won the 200 medley relay in 2:55.42. Both times qualified for state.
On the boys side, Reese Hugo, 10, won the 50 freestyle in 33.06, which is a new DSC record. He also posted qualifying times in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 50 backstroke.
Denny Woods, 10, qualified in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
The 12-and-under state championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Air Force Academy.
