When Katzin Music closed this past spring, musicians were left with few local options when it came to buying the supplies they needed.
But not long after Katzin’s retail doors closed for good, new ones opened.
Jimmy’s Music & Supply, owned by Jim Gillaspy, formerly of Katzin, opened July 1, and a grand opening party will be held Aug. 11. There will be live music, food, deals on merchandise, and shoppers may register to win a Teton Acoustic Guitar.
In the month since its opening, Gillaspy said the reception has been positive.
“It’s been really, really good,” he said. “Everyone’s super-thankful that I’m doing this. It’s real heartfelt feelings that I stepped in and did this. That’s amazing.”
He said the store at 1480 East Second Ave., at the corner of 15th Street and East Second Avenue, will carry supplies musicians need, as well as offering repairs, a selection of instruments and consignments.
Along with the ability to have a convenient place to get gear, it’s also about supporting the local economy, Gillapsy said.
“It really created a conversation about local business and about local stores and how it kind of matters to people,” he said. “They do realize that it’s nice to stroll in when they get a chance and buy some strings.”
Gillapsy said he hopes the shop will be more than just a place to drop in and get what you need; he hopes it will be a place to build community and where musicians can go to network. And when it comes to questions musicians may have, Gillaspy’s been in the business for more than two decades, he said.
“I hope it’s that they also like to feed off the vibe of a music store and see some cool stuff,” he said. “Also, they can ask me things, bounce things off me, ask my opinion, and I would hope that 27 years of doing this gives some kind of cred to what I have to say. I make them feel comfortable about the direction they’re going, the product they’re buying. They need that reassurance and guidance sometimes when they’re looking at a sea of five stars and online chatroom opinions. I’m more definitive than that.”
Jimmy’s Music & Supply is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
