I believe this is an appropriate time of year to thank our dedicated educators in Durango School District 9-R. After reading Mimi Thurstons letter to the editor (Herald, May 1), I felt that someone should speak out in favor of our local educational system.
I have worked in 9-R schools for 25 years and know firsthand the hard work and creativity it takes to teach a child. Im disappointed that Thurston has never been able to recognize this. The fact that her son is heading to a university is a great achievement. However, to not give credit or recognize even one teacher from kindergarten through senior year in high school is short-sighted.
In addition, the San Juan BOCS Assistive Technology team, with which I worked for many years, does provide students with tools they need to be successful in life. They are a dedicated group of people.
So, teachers, just know that we dont all agree with Thurstons statement regarding what an inadequate job you have done for the last 13 years. Hats off to our dedicated professionals, and a job well done sending another student on to higher education.
