50 years ago: The Durango Chamber of Commerce reported that, in the last three days, the number of visitors in Southwest Colorado took “a whopping jump.” Tourists flooding the area had occupied “every motel and every rentable room in private homes” in Durango, and chamber member Mrs. Al Acord worked tirelessly to accommodate weary travelers in Silverton, Pagosa Springs, Mancos and Cortez, and even sent people to guest ranches and the hostel at Rockwood.
25 years ago: A resident called the Durango Police Department to request assistance with finding and capturing a 13-foot boa constrictor that went missing from a home on Animas View Drive. Officers found the snake the next morning with “no mishaps reported.”
