Benefit for local family to be today
A benefit dinner for the family of Shaniah Farmer will begin at 5 p.m. today at the Bayfield Elementary School, 551 E. Mustang Lane in Bayfield.
The event is sponsored by the La Plata County 4-H. Tacos, burritos, salads and drinks will be served.
There will also be a family dance and auction.
The cost for the dinner and dance is $10. The cost for the dance only is $5. The dance will begin at 8 p.m. Music will be provided by Largo.
All proceeds will go to pay medical and other expenses for the family of Shaniah, a 4-H member who died March 22.

Program on Egypt to be held Tuesday
A free program and slide show called Egypt: Ancient Deities and Timeless Wisdom will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Lavenia McCoy Public Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.
Author Julie Loar will share experiences and images from her journeys to Egypt and speculate on the lure of this ancient land. Loar also will have copies of her book, Messengers, available for signing after the program.

Talk, potluck to be held at Natural Foods
Durango Natural Foods will host a free talk and community potluck celebration with Joshua Jackson, general manager of Durango Natural Foods, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday on the patio of the business.
People will explore the importance and benefits of cooperatives.
Participants should bring a dish to share.
This will be the first event in a summer of free educational events at Durango Natural Foods.

American Red Cross seeks donations
The American Red Cross is helping people along the Mississippi River, where forecasters are predicting flooding. Meanwhile, Red Cross relief efforts are continuing across the South, where tornadoes destroyed or damaged as many as 13,000 homes in recent weeks. Thousands of people have been affected by these disasters.

Yoga, tai chi to be taught at senior center
Marie Epp will teach Hatha style yoga at 9:15 a.m. and a Dr. Lams style of tai chi at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave.
These are five-week sessions. The fee is $20.
Preregistration with payment is required. Classes are appropriate for beginners and experienced students.
The next session will be held from May 31 to June 28.

Ag Expo board to meet Wednesday
The board of directors of the Four States Ag Expo will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the upstairs conference room at the Cortez Chamber of Commerce, 928 East Main St. in Cortez.
Anyone with an interest in agriculture in general and the Ag Expo in particular is welcome.
The meeting will focus on planning for the 30th anniversary Ag Expo, to be held from March 15 to 18, 2012.
