Character development

“One way of getting to a character’s spine is to think about this statement: I want the world to see me as ____, because I am not,” Theresa Carson said to her cast at a rehearsal last week for “Next to Normal.”
So began a roundtable discussion at Durango Arts Center before a full run through of the musical in mid-August. The show will formally open Thursday for a three-weekend run.
Sitting around a table filled with papers, water bottles and scripts at the DAC, Carson asked Jenny Fitts Reynolds, Ben Mattson, Luke McCauley, Siena Widen, Geoff Johnson and Athan Garza to identify the word they selected to pinpoint their character’s core dilemma.
Cast members offered a variety of answers: a hero, the strong one, capable, stable, an expert, confident, worthy and, touchingly, “normal,” proffered by Fitts Reynolds, who sings the pivotal role of Diana Goodman in this drama about a family in crisis.
Working toward a vision of an inclusive company, Carson has drawn together experienced community actors, Fort Lewis College students and alumni and talented Durango High School students.
Describing the set, Carson said, “I want to present a normal, all-American family in an all-American home, a bit rundown, but it’s home.”
“But this is not the standard musical,” Carson said. “Things happen with operatic force.”
