Wrestling honors continue to pour in for the area's high school wrestlers.
Four Bayfield High School wrestlers recently were named to the all-conference team from the Class 3A Intermountain League.
BHS state qualifiers Trevor Huntsman, Austin Thorne, Markus Eckstein and Taylor Swanemyr were selected for the all-league team by the Intermountain League coaches. Huntsman, Thorne and Eckstein were named to the all-conference first team.
Swanemyr was named to the all-league honorable mention list.
Six Bayfield wrestlers also were named to the all-state academic wrestling team by the Colorado High School Activities
The academic all-stars included Eckstein, Cody Butero, Brenden Harrison, Justin Shupe, Will Treanor and Jeff Huffmyer.
The Wolverines, coached by veteran Herb Stinson, also had two wrestlers selected for the All-State Wrestling Matches on June 13. The senior wrestlers were selected by the Colorado High School Coaches Association.
Bayfield will be represented by state-placers Huntsman and
Eckstein, who wrestled at 189 pounds this year for the Wolverines, was invited to the all-state matches this summer.
A four-time state qualifier, Eckstein finished his prep career with a 105-43 record, winning 71 percent of his matches.
Eckstein was a three-time regional champion. He finished third in the State Tournament recently at the Pepsi Center in Denver. He had a fifth-place state finish earlier in his career.
Teammate Huntsman, a 125-pounder, also was a four-time state qualifier. Huntsman also was a regional champion this year. He finished sixth at the 2009 state tourney in Denver.
Huntsman's career record at Bayfield was 120-46, taking 77 percent of his matches.
Three Wolverines have been invited to a special high school open tournament in Cripple Creek this summer. The tournament is for graduating seniors as well as underclassmen.
The Wolverines invited are Eckstein, Huntsman and Aaron Velasquez, who finished his freshman season fourth at the State Tournament at 152 pounds.
Ignacio High School wrestling coach Bob Overturf took a team of Bobcats to the Rocky Mountain Nationals, a big multistate tournament in Denver last weekend. The field included top wrestlers from states in the Rocky Mountain West.
"It was tough, tough competition," Overturf said. "There were state champions from all over ... really tough wrestlers."
The Ignacio wrestlers were led by 2009 state champion Alex Peña, who won his state title as a freshman in Denver last month. Peña went 5-2 at the Rocky Mountain Nationals, finishing fifth. He lost to the eventual Rocky Mountain champion by only two points.
Teammate Casey Haga, a two-time state placer, also went 5-2 at the Rocky Mountain Nationals, finishing fifth. Haga was fifth at state this year at 125 pounds. He was second at state as a freshman in 2008.
Will Appenzeller of Ignacio went 2-2 at the Rocky Mountain meet last weekend.
Raudel Lucero of the Bobcats went 1-2. Lorenza Peña went
1-2, and Cuahtemoc Torres also went 1-2.
