May is Pediatric Stroke Awareness Month. Its not common, but it does happen. In Durango alone, there are at least three pediatric stroke survivors ranging in age from 1 to 15 years old.
My daughter is a 12-year survivor, and we are so proud of her. We once were told she would not walk, talk or advance beyond the mental abilities of an 18-month-old. But she beat those odds: She sings, swims, skis, serves at church, baby-sits and has a heart bigger than these Rocky Mountains.
Not all children are so lucky. We have been blessed with great friends and family and doctors. Others need your help. For more information, visit www.chasa.org or the American Heart Association. And hug your child today.
