After a hot start to the season, the Ignacio football team came crashing back to earth with a 42-6 thumping by Newcomb, New Mexico, and handed the Bobcats their first loss of the season.
The teams were scoreless after the first quarter, but Newcomb eventually found its offensive groove with three scores in the second quarter. Newcomb scored on a 64-yard touchdown pass, an 82-yard punt return and capped off the half with a 14-yard touchdown pass. Newcomb led at the break 22-0 after converting two 2-point conversions.
It was a similar story in the second half, as the Skyhawks (3-0) forced a fumble and took it back 25 yards for the score. The attempted 2-point conversion failed, and Newcomb led 28-0. That remained the score at the end of the third quarter.
In the final frame, Ignacio got on the board with 8:33 left, going 40 yards in three plays. Bobcats quarterback Ian Weinreich threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Labarthe. The 2-point conversion was missed, and that would prove to be the final score of the game as the mercy rule clock ran out as Ignacio was driving deep in Skyhawk territory.
Weinreich went 7-of-14 for 112 yards, one touchdown and did not throw any interceptions. Bobcats running back Dustin Sanchez had seven carries for 56 yards. Lebarthe had four catches for 71 yards while Colten Jackson had three catches for 41 yards.
Ignacio (2-1) will look to get back in the win column against John Mall of Walsenburg at 7 p.m. on Friday.
