The Bayfield High School track team raced off to a blazing start to the new season with a pair of second-place team finishes at the annual Hotchkiss Invitational last weekend.
The BHS girls and boys teams finished second to Eagle Valley in their respective divisions. Sixteen prep teams competed at Hotchkiss.
For the boys, Bayfield totaled 74 points, second only to Eagle Valley's 84. Host Hotchkiss was third with 65, followed by Cedaredge (63), Coal Ridge (61), Rifle (55.5) and Paonia (53). Other teams, in order, included Roaring Fork, Hayden, Olathe, Norwood, Ouray, Plateau Valley, Basalt, Delta and the Montrose JV team.
Eagle Valley's girls totaled 132 points with BHS second at 112. Olathe was third with 78 points.
Cedaredge was fourth.
The Bayfield boys had one individual first-place finish and one top relay finish.
Dakota Decker of the Wolverines won the 100-meter dash in 11.47 seconds.
The 4x800 relay team of Zeb Cyr, Derek Laue, Tanner Phelps and Will Treanor finished first in 8:41.74The Wolverines had three top finishers in the 800 and 1600. Phelps was second in the 800 in 2:06.65 and second in the 1600 in 4:46.61.
Laue was fourth in each race (2:11.37 and 4:52.42). Teammate Cyr was seventh in the 800 while Bayfield's John Cusick was seventh in the 1600.
BHS relay teams finished third in the 800 behind Decker, Tanner Paulek, Cody Smith and Taylor Swanemyr (1:35.56).
The BHS 4x400 team was third with Cyr, Jordan Fields, Laue and Phelps (3:53.28).
Cusick was fourth in the 3200. Swanemyr added a fifth in the triple jump, and Seth Posey finished sixth in the shot put.
The Bayfield girls put two relay teams at the top of the podium.
Sophomore Jacey Sirios had an individual title, winning the 100 in 13.19.
She teamed with Sierra Aten, Marleigh Coffelt and Lisa Wickman to win the 4x100 relay in 53:31.
BHS also won the 4x200 relay behind Aten, Patty Powers, Sirios and Wickman (1:51.08)Powers also was second in the individual 200 in 28:07. Teammate Wickman was eighth.
Makaila Miller was third in the 800 in 2:48.15. Erika Newell was sixth.
Newell also finished fourth in the 1600 (6:14.86).
Wickman added a third in the 100 hurdles.
Myra Dean finished second in the high jump (5-0) with Sirios third.
Caitlin Simbek was second in the long jump at 14-11. Teammate Holly Hollingsworth was fourth (14-7.5).
Hollingsworth also finished third in the triple jump (30-9.25).
Brandi Calderwood added a fifth in the discus.
The BHS 4x400 relay team was third with Miller, Amanda Newell, M. Semler and Simbeck.
And the BHS 4x800 team was fourth with Miller, Erika Newell, Amanda Newell and Semler.
The Wolverines' next meet will be April 4 at Bloomfield.
