No worship, just service for Durango Methodists to be held next weekend
To volunteer

Anyone is welcome to join members of First United Methodist Church in their weekend of community service June 4 and 5.
Most activities will be June 5, but there will be several June 4 as well.
Most activities will begin at 7:20 or 9:20 a.m. June 5 at the church, but others will start at times throughout the day.
Volunteers are asked to sign up by Sunday evening by contacting Barb Clair at bsheahanclair@aol.com or 382-6602; or Marcia Heidenreich at heidm@mwci.net or 259-9584.
Service projects have been divided into four broad categories:
b Ministries of encouragement and friendship – athletic field day with Big Brothers Big Sisters; children’s fun time at low-income housing complex; make homemade cards, pictures and letters for shut-ins; sing hymns or lead worship service at Sunshine Gardens Country Home; write letters to servicemen and -women or thank yous to police, firefighters and other public servants; host seniors on excursion to Durango Public Library; give manicures/pedicures to residents at Four Corners Health Care Center; and performance of the church’s youth band at brunch at Manna Soup Kitchen.
b Meeting needs of individuals and families – design your own ministry; prepare meals for those just out of the hospital; in teams of two, provide respite care for regular caregivers of people who cannot be left alone; or do yard work for people who can’t do it for themselves.
b Meeting community needs – landscape at Buckley Park; yard cleanup at Homeward Bound and Community Homeless Shelter; plant a vegetable garden at First United Methodist for the hungry; clean up and beautify city parks, trails and buildings; work on nature trail at Animas Valley Elementary School; replace light fixtures or paint at the Methodist Christian School; build a shelter and shelves at the Methodist Thrift Shop; paint a mural for Vacation Bible School; prepare a picnic for residents at the Homeless Shelter; make placemats for residents at Sunshine Gardens Country Home; or go on multiday mission trips, either to McCurdy School in New Mexico or Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
b Assisting so that others may serve – provide child care; bake cookies; help prepare the celebration dinner; work on the greeting/information team; or take digital photos and video at various work sites.
