Three fun, family-friendly events are coming up this month in and around downtown Durango.
This Friday is the third annual Downtown Hot Air Balloon Glow. This unique offering is part of the Animas Valley Balloon Rally, organized by longtime balloonist Doug Lenberg. The Durango Business Improvement District is partnering with the Balloon Rally to once again bring hot-air balloons to downtown for an evening glow.
Four balloons will be placed along the 500 block of Main Avenue in front of the railroad depot, and there will also be five candlesticks. (Candlesticks are the basket and the burner but without the balloon, like you see in the Snowdown parade.)
The pilots will let you pull the burner if you wish; it’s quite the thrill!
BID asks the community to arrive at the 500 block of Main around 6 p.m. The balloons will inflate at 6:30, weather permitting. They will stay up for about an hour, until 7:30 p.m., again weather permitting. New this year will be a water and soda booth from the Lions Club, and a kettle corn booth.
Don’t forget that you can go out to eat right on the 500 block of Main before or after the Balloon Glow at The Palace, T’s Smokehouse, East by Southwest, Sizzling Siam or Nini’s Taqueria. You can also pick up a sweet treat at Starbucks, Cold Stone Creamery or Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Or shop some of the amazing stores. Visit DowntownDurango.org/balloonglow to learn more.
The Colorado High School Mountain Bike Championships are coming to Durango this month for the first time ever. This growing sport has 79 teams and more than 1,200 riders from Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico participating.
The championships will have 600 to 700 riders in it, and traveling along with them are parents, siblings and grandparents. The dates are Saturday, Oct. 20, and Sunday, Oct. 21, and the location is Ewing Mesa. Come out and watch this fun event, support the local teams from Durango and Animas high schools, and see the first big event at this unique and beautiful location.
Don’t forget about Children’s Trick or Treat on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. in downtown Durango. Children’s Trick or Treat is for kids 10 and under, in costume and accompanied by an adult. Up to 100 stores in downtown will be handing out candy. Please join us on Halloween for this safe, fun and free event.
