If Christine Anderson has a problem with Rep. Scott Tiptons position on Obamas hostile stance toward Israel (Letters, Herald, May 29), she must be having conniptions with Congress giving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 29 standing ovations. Led by Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and John McCain, those ovations showed the support that the majority of the American people have for Israel.
As a law professor, Anderson should realize that facts matter. Fairy tales are best told at bedtime, not in the Opinion section of the Herald. And she demonstrates the usual rhetoric of the vehemently anti-Israel crowd.
Yes, the United States does give aid to Israel. But the United States also gives aid to all Arab countries. Because she lived in Egypt, did Anderson know or care that we just forgave a $1 billion debt from that country? Did she know that aid to Israel is mostly in loan guarantees? That means Israel does not get cash. Its credit that Israel is required to purchase product from U.S. companies. Those purchases keep more than 80,000 people employed in America. Most companies deal in military hardware, but has Anderson noticed that Israelis neighbors are constantly trying to kill them.
What also might be news to Anderson is that we give much more aid to South Korea, Europe and other countries. Wherever our troops are stationed, those dollars are listed as defense budget spending, not as foreign aid. Heck, we spend $50 billion a year protecting Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf alone. Saudi Arabia a beacon of human rights!
The bleeding of taxpayer dollars comes not from Israel but from those Arab countries that gladly take our money and teach hate. With the Palestinian Authority teaming up with Hamas, dont you just love giving our money to a terrorist gang? This is the same Hamas that celebrates the slaughter of Israeli children.
Finally, with the Muslim Brotherhood making Egypt into another Iran, Anderson should feel right at home whenever she returns there.
