This is in regard to thefts in the Durango Community Recreation Center locker rooms. As has been pointed out, these types of thefts are hard to guard against. The question is, why are individuals who steal credit and debit cards then able to use them? The retail stores where these cards are used are part of the problem because clerks are not asking for identification from people when they make card purchases.
From my experience, no more than about half of local retail establishments ask for identification when I use my cards, and I thank them when they do.
Given the tough economic times, I believe all retail establishments should be made aware of the importance of verifying that the credit cards they are presented with actually belong to that customer. Perhaps the police or the Better Business Bureau should initiate some kind of education program, which I believe would do a lot to reduce this kind of crime.
