LITTLETON – Colorado authorities say 13 people have been taken to a hospital after an apartment fire created heavy smoke inside the building.
South Metro Fire Rescue says the fire was reported early Saturday morning. The flames were contained to one unit inside the Littleton community for people age 55 and older, located about 11 miles south of downtown Denver.
But heavy smoke prevented many residents from safely leaving.
South Metro Fire Rescue spokesman Eric Hurst says first responders guided residents out through smoky hallways and removed others through balconies and patios.
Three of the people taken for medical treatment were described as being in serious condition. Ten others were described as being in stable condition.
It is not clear yet what caused the fire.
