It was with great sadness that I discovered my friends Wally and Gleb Derunjinsky had died in a tragic car accident. Ive known them since the mid-1990s when we taught at Purgatory together.
I will always have fond memories of watching Gleb leading a class full of little kids all over the mountain. Sometimes Wally would tag along at the rear of the group, and the image reminded me of a family of ducks. Im sure hundreds of native Durangoans may be reading this and wondering if they learned to ski from Gleb. If you did, you were lucky because Gleb subscribed to the ski more-talk less philosophy of ski instruction that is fairly rare.
Instructors still fondly talk about a uniform malfunction that we coined Glebbing it. If you are curious, ask an old-time instructor.
Ill miss seeing Wally at For the Birds. She always had great gift ideas and was great with my little girl.
Finally, I want to thank them for our rings; they are as unique as the couple who made them.
