I would like to speak to the issue of bikes on the new path along Florida Road. Although there are bike lanes on Florida Road, these are not appropriate for all bikers to use. The path provides an opportunity for those who are not comfortable riding in the traffic on Florida Road to get out on their bikes.
I would never dream of riding on Florida Road with my 6-year-old daughter. I dont care if there is a bike lane it is still not safe for her to ride in that traffic. Now, with this beautiful, wide path along Florida Road, we can ride our bikes as a family to many places where we would otherwise have to drive the car. Not only can we ride together downtown for lunch or to Folsom Park to play, but we have also biked to Bread for a family breakfast, which is something we had never considered because of safety concerns.
As a casual cyclist, I am not comfortable biking to work in the Florida Road commuter traffic. Now, because of the access provided by the path, I have the option to ride my bike to work. I know many families and individuals who have taken advantage of the new path in similar ways.
The path along Florida Road presents a wonderful opportunity for those of us who are not cyclists to get out on our bikes and enjoy Durango and maybe cut down on a little vehicle traffic as well.
Much like the Animas River Trail, the path is wide enough to accommodate all who want to enjoy it, as long as we are considerate and respectful of each other.
