The star of the first of Durango's three giant concerts, either outdoors or in Fort Lewis College's Whalen Gymnasium, this year will be the veteran musician Charlie Daniels, who won a Grammy for his classic "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."
Gary Pennington, who headed the Community Concert Hall for 10 years, will produce the show. Pennington has expanded into an office at the concert hall's ticket office on Main Avenue with a staff. They include Gwen Williams, promotion and sponsorship; Indiana Reed, publicity; Jim Turner, production; Kelly Rogers, lights and sound; and Lisa Blue, all rounder.
Daniels hasn't been to Durango since the mid-1980s, Pennington said at the Herald's offices Thursday. He talked about Daniels as a Southern working-class rocker, devout Christian and Westerner who was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry this month.
This will be the second in the "Concerts for Scholarships" series that started last June with the open-air concert when the Beach Boys played in driving rain.
Pennington plans another indoor concert and an outdoor concert this summer.
