As stated in a recent Durango Herald article, Colorado ski areas are on the front lines of the battle with climate change.
The CEO of Aspen Skiing Co. noted there has been a 2 degree increase in temperature over the past 50 years. Now, the warming trend is accelerating, due to increased carbon emissions. This trend does not bode well for Colorado’s ski industry.
As a skier, I find this very concerning. Also, our local economy depends on good snow conditions at Purgatory. Unfortunately, last year was not a good snow year. I hope this year is not a repeat of last year.
Fortunately, bipartisan legislation to address climate change has recently been introduced into Congress – the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act.
This act will impose a steadily rising fee on carbon pollution and will return all revenue, less administrative costs, to households equally. This bill, a market-based approach with bipartisan support, will reduce carbon pollution while putting money (dividends) in people’s pockets, and will be good for business and create jobs.
Representative Scott Tipton, please join the bill’s sponsors and support this important legislation in the next Congress. We cannot afford any further delay. We must act now to address climate change.
