Cycling through a bar, a Durango tradition

The crowd cheered on Bill Whale as he rode through the bar at Ernie’s at the 11th Street Station on Thursday during the Snowdown Speed Racer Adult Tricycle Race. A bicycle race through a bar has long been a staple of Durango culture with the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and its mountain bike race through Steamworks Brewing Co. Now, Ernie’s joined the club with the new Snowdown event.
Katie Leirer raced around the bar at Ernie’s as the race went through the front of the bar and out the back before looping around the food truck court back to the finish line. Contestants had to chug a beer before beginning to pedal their tricycles, and Leirer proved she could handle the tight turns with the best racers.
