One of Durango's best-loved artists, last year's Durango Arts Center Sweetheart of the Arts, has been chosen to construct a major installation in Long Beach, Calif.
Mary Ellen Long is one of six artists to participate in a show called "Novel Constructions: Artists Create Monumental Books," which will show through Aug. 16 at the Long Beach Museum of Art.
Anne Dreyer of the museum said Wednesday that Long's installation includes a forest of cast paper trees flanking her deteriorating books.
Long's work was selected by guest curator Jean Clad.
Dreyer added that Long, an aficionado of creating art from weathered artifacts and found objects, has stacked her handmade paper outside just before the winter snows for 18 years.
The paper is marked by decay and transition during its winter hibernation. Its appearance changes with the seasonal changes. Long recovers the paper in the spring and collaborates with nature to make her books.
