For their first post-Durango High School production, the husband-and-wife team of Mona Wood-Patterson and Charles Ford, founders of the local theater group Merely Players, selected Neil LaButes 2001 play The Shape of Things. The play, which was turned into a 2003 movie starring Rachel Weisz and Paul Rudd, is about four Midwestern college students and their complicated, intertwined romances. Theres also a shocking surprise at the end, but no spoilers here the local production does the original justice and is well worth a trip to the Back Space Theatre.
The Merely Players version stars Elizabeth Gray as the enigmatic Evelyn, Adam Fontana as her protegé Adam, and Lynzee Newton and Erik Andersson as Jenny and Phillip, the couple whose lives are turned upside-down by Evelyn and Adams relationship. All four actors are former students of Wood-Pattersons.
Get your popcorn early; LaButes standing instructions allow for no intermission or curtain call, so find a seat and get comfortable.
