9-R school board to hold election
The Durango School District 9-R board will hold an election Nov. 1 to fill board vacancies.
The election process will begin in August. To be eligible for a school board seat, candidates must have lived in the school district for the last 12 months, be a registered voter for the last 12 months and be a current resident within district boundaries.

DHS to collect participation fees
Durango High School will begin collecting fees and issuing red or white cards on Aug. 1 for fall 2011 athletic and activity participants.
The participation fee will be $50 per activity, with a cap of $100 per student and $150 per family per year. Athletes and participants should be prepared to pay their fee when they pick up their red or white card. Students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. However, family financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation.

Durango High School announces sports and band will begin on these dates:

FLC will host alumni reunion
The Fort Lewis College Centennial Alumni Reunion will be held Aug. 5-6.

Canoe and kayak trips down the Animas River will be held Aug. 5 followed by a reception at the Strater Hotel.
On Aug. 6, there will be tours of Durango and the FLC campus, live music and dancing, games for children and recognition of the alumni. Returning alumni have the option to stay in the dorms on campus or discounted lodging in Durango.

Bayfield schools announce events
The Bayfield School District announces these events:
Bayfield High School students will begin school Aug. 22.
Bayfield Middle School students will begin school Aug. 22.
Kindergarten to sixth-grade students will not have school Aug. 22, however they must attend an open house from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Students in grades one to five will begin school Aug. 23.
Kindergartners who are registered will receive a letter informing them when their first day will be. Half of kindergartners will come to school Aug. 24, and the other half will come Aug. 25. All kindergartners will attend Aug. 26. Students registering for kindergarten must be 5 years old on or by Sept. 15.
Class placement information for students already enrolled in kindergarten to fifth grade will be available Aug. 15. Caregivers should register their children as soon as possible. School offices will reopen Aug. 8.

Vangi McCoy receives honor
Vangi McCoy was recently selected as a Champion for Children.
During June, the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center receives nominations from the community for an individual in the Four Corners who makes a difference in the lives of children.
McCoy is the Montelores Early Childhood Council Coordinator. She received several nominations from various community members. Each nomination included a supporting narrative describing the nominees character and activities relevant to the submission. McCoy was recognized for her support of children and families through Montelores Early Childhood Council and the Family Leadership Training Institute.
The Champion for Children Celebration is a fundraising event to support the intervention and prevention of child abuse in the Four Corners region of Colorado.
